Due to the sad passing of the Queen, all Friday’s games were postponed until the Saturday.
On Saturday our Ladies had their first game in the preliminary round at 9-30am against Isle of Wight,. After a super 12 up after 3 ends there was a period of uncertainty for the next 6 ends or so but the ladies regrouped and won the game 19-13.
The next game was delayed by an impromptu display of Morris dancing by the Middleton cup men. Once the green had been cleared the 1st round started and this was a much more cagey affair. The game ebbed and flowed right until the final end. Our Ladies were 3 behind and 2 down when Yvonne stepped up and following Sheila’s instructions to the letter she took the jack back to make the 3 required to draw. The extra end began with Sally’s second wood on the jack and that’s where it stayed to eventually win the end by 2 and the match 16-14. The 2nd round had to be played directly after this match, making it 3 games for our Ladies to be played on the same day. Unfortunately they lost 5-22, although the game was better than the score indicates.
However we are very proud of our ladies, Sally Field, Mayumi Lewis, Sheila Murphy and Yvonne McColl, for representing Wiltshire. We believe that that this is the furthest any Wiltshire ladies in this group have ever reached.
In closing, I would like to thank Karen Varney, Sue Pitman and Les Fish for the information and photographs making up this report.
